Stein, Mr. James I. - USAID

Mr. James (Jim) Stein joined the War College faculty in 2017.  Previously, he served as the Mission Director for USAID/Macedonia, 2013-2017. Mr. Stein also served as Deputy Mission Director, USAID/Afghanistan, and Director, Strategy and Program Office, in the Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC/SPO) in USAID/Washington.  A member of the Senior Foreign Service, Mr. Stein has served in seven countries during his 30 years in the Foreign Service: Afghanistan, Guatemala, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Macedonia, and Serbia.

He has directed USAID offices and projects in the areas of economic policy reform, small enterprise development, financial and capital market development, public finance, microfinance, urban water and sanitation, low-income housing, environmental management, agriculture and rural development policy, and democracy and governance. As the Director of LAC/SPO, he supervised the Bureau’s annual program budget formulation and execution processes, program operations reporting, and country program strategy formulation and approvals. Mr. Stein is an alumnus of Stanford University (B.A., Economics) and received a Masters of Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed additional doctoral coursework in development economics and urban studies and planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  He was a volunteer in the Philippines from 1977 to 1979 at the International Institute for Rural Reconstruction, with Volunteers in Asia, a non-governmental volunteer organization based at Stanford University. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. Stein is married and has two children.  He and his wife are residents of Northern Virginia.
