DAVID AUERSWALD is Professor of Security Studies at the National War College (NWC) in Washington, DC, in the United States.  He has been on the NWC faculty since the summer of 2001.  In that time he has served as Acting Dean of Faculty, Associate Dean of Academic Programs, and on three separate occasions as a Course Director for major portions of the NWC curriculum. 

Dr. Auerswald has published books and articles on a variety of national security and foreign policy topics.  His most recent publications include:

  • “Legislatures and Civil-Military Relations in the U.S. and U.K.” Western European Politics, vol. 40, forthcoming 2017. 
  • “The Arctic: A Geopolitical Assessment,” chapter 17 in Strategic Assessment 2016. (Washington, DC: National Defense University Press, 2016). 
  •  “Geopolitical Icebergs,” Proceedings, vol. 141, no. 12 (December 2015), 18-23. 
  • Congress and Civil-Military Relations.  Edited with Colton Campbell.  (Georgetown University Press, 2015).
  • NATO in Afghanistan: Fighting Together, Fighting Alone. Co-authored with Stephen Saideman.  (Princeton University Press, 2014).
  • Congress and the Politics of National Security.  Edited with Colton Campbell. (New York: Cambridge University Press, 2012)

Dr. Auerswald previously served on the faculty of George Washington University’s Department of Political Science and the Elliott School of International Affairs.  He has worked as a congressional staff member on three separate occasions: on the personal staff of a House member, a senator’s personal staff, and the professional staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. 

Dr. Auerswald received his Ph.D. and M.A. in political science from the University of California, San Diego, and undergraduate degrees in political science and English literature from Brown University.  Dr. Auerswald was raised in Hawaii.  He is married and has two children.
