Ms. Alexandria “Alexi” Panehal recently served as the USAID Mission Director in the Dominican Republic. Prior to her current assignment, Ms. Panehal was the acting Deputy Assistant Administrator for USAID's Economic Growth, Education, and Environment Bureau at USAID headquarters in Washington, D.C. Following the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Ms. Panehal led inter-agency efforts in Washington to coordinate shelter and infrastructure reconstruction. In 2010, Ms. Panehal also co-chaired the Task Force that drafted USAID's Gender Equality and Female Empowerment Policy and co-chaired with State the Gender Integration Task Force for the QDDR. From 2005-2009, she was the USAID Mission Director in Ecuador and from 2000-2003 she was the Deputy Mission Director for the Regional Mission for Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus. Overseas, Ms. Panehal has also served as Director of the Regional Housing and Urban Development Office in Honduras, assignments with that same division in Tunisia and Thailand, and as Director of the Democracy Office in Nicaragua.
In Washington, Ms. Panehal has also served as the Agency's Director of the Office of infrastructure and Engineering and the Deputy Office Director for Environment in Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States. Ms. Panehal has a Bachelor's Degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and two Master's degrees, one in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and another Master's Degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College. Ms. Panehal joined USAID in 1983.
