Alex Laskaris began his assignment at the National Defense University in July 2019.  Previously, he served as the Deputy to the Commander of United State Africa Command.  Other assignments include Ambassador to the Republic of Guinea from 2012 to 2015, and three years in Iraq as Consul General in Erbil and Leader of the Provincial Reconstruction in Mosul.  He has twice served as Deputy Chief of Mission, in Kosovo and Burundi, and has also been posted in Angola, Botswana, Liberia, the Sinai and the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York.  Prior to joining the Foreign Service in 1991, he was a high school English teacher in Galeshewe, South Africa.  He holds a Bachelor's degree in International Politics from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and a Master's in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He speaks French, Spanish, Portuguese, Albanian, Kurdish, Greek and Soussou.
