Colonel Charles McElvaine joined the NWC as a member of the military faculty in July of 2020. Prior to joining the faculty, he commanded the 479th Flying Training Group, overseeing the Air Force’s sole training pipeline for combat systems officers. Col McElvaine previously served as the Chief of Nuclear Operations, J-33, Joint Staff. In that role he led a team responsible for drafting the President’s Nuclear Decision Handbook, educating senior officials from across the government, and ensuring the efficacy and reliability of the nation’s nuclear command and control system. Colonel McElvaine holds Masters degrees from the National War College (2015), the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies (2011) and Air Command and Staff College (2010). He is a master navigator with more than 2500 hours in the B-52H and is a graduate of the USAF Weapons School.
