Commander Jason Smith joined the NWC as a military faculty and Coast Guard Chair in July 2020. He has served as Strategic Advisor and Communications Director for the Commandant of the Coast Guard, on the National Security Council, and Senior Policy Advisor in the Senate. He has served as an aviator in the United States Coast Guard and in the U.S. Army. He has led soldiers and sailors during three combat deployments, nine afloat deployments, and in emergency response to several hurricanes, including hurricane Katrina - rescuing more than 200 lives. He has served at the operational and strategic level working with state, federal, tribal, and foreign governments. Commander Smith has a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard, a Master’s in International Relations from St. Mary’s University, a Bachelor’s in Biology from Sam Houston State University, and is a PhD candidate at George Mason University.
