Thomas M. Duffy, a Senior Foreign Service Officer with the US Department of State, is a Faculty Advisor at the US National War College.
Tom returned to teaching at National after serving as an Office Director in the International Trade Division at the US Department of State and 33 months as the acting US Permanent Representative to the UN’s Rome-Based Agencies (USUN Rome). His previous State Department assignments include service as US Consul General in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Deputy Consul General at the US Consulate General in Jerusalem, Political Advisor to the US 5th Fleet in Manama, Bahrain, and deputy political-military affairs counselor at the then newly re-opened US Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. Tom has extensive multilateral experience - in addition to USUN Rome, he served as Director of the Office of UN Political Affairs in Washington and as a member of the US delegation at USUN New York. Tom served for a year out of the Department as an International Affairs Fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations. His initial State Department tours were as Egypt desk officer in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, political-military affairs officer at Embassy Riyadh, and consular officer in Bogota, Colombia.
Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Tom served in the US Navy as a surface warfare officer aboard USS COCHRANE (DDG-21) and as a strategist with the Navy Staff in the Pentagon (OP-603), where he worked on post-Cold War revisions to the Maritime Strategy.
Tom received his BA in Government and International Studies from the University of Notre Dame and MA in War Studies from King’s College, London. He is also a graduate of the US Naval War College.
