Dr. Bard E. O'Neill retired from full-time teaching duties at the National War College in July 2011 and was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus as a tribute to his decades-long service to Professional Military Education. Dr. O'Neill graduated from Saint Michaels College in Winooski Park, VT and later earned his Master's Degree in Political Science from San Diego State College. He then went on to earn his PhD from the University of Denver, School of International Relations, in 1972. In 1963, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, going on to service in Vietnam from 1965-1966, before retiring from active duty in 1985. During Bard’s time in the Air Force, he taught Political Science at the USAF Academy and in 1976, became Professor of National Security Strategy at the National War College. Dr. O'Neill was an accomplished lecturer and teacher for over 40 years. He was the author of countless journals and books including Insurgency and Terrorism: Inside Modern Revolution Warfare. He served as a consultant to various international and defense think tanks as well as several U.S. Government agencies.
